To obtain the approbation in Germany, sufficient professional German language skills and medical expertise must be demonstrated. Together with our partner Lingoda and their Match Doctors initiative, we have developed a state-funded preparation course:
• Study online with a study plan tailor-made for the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) in AMBOSS
• Online language course from Lingoda (full-time or part-time)
The online preparation course is state-funded, meaning the costs can be fully covered under certain conditions. If you are interested in the combined preparation course, please contact Lingoda using the form below.
The state-funded preparation course for the Kenntnisprüfung (knowledge test) supports doctors in obtaining recognition for their medical qualifications acquired abroad—regardless of whether they are currently employed in Germany or not.
Additional information can be found in our FAQs. Lingoda will answer further questions after the form has been submitted.
For those who want to focus on professional language first, our partner Lingoda also offers a preparation course for the medical language examination (Fachsprachprüfung).
1. Fill in the non-binding contact form.
2. Lingoda will contact you to discuss your personal situation.
3. Select the course format and start time, and register for the preparation course.
The process for recognition of a medical qualification differs depending on whether it was obtained within or outside the EU. We have put together an information page for anyone who would like to find out more about the approbation process.
The course combines practical C1-level language instruction from Lingoda with the AMBOSS Kenntnisprüfung study plan. Participants learn in small groups (max. 12 people) and benefit from interactive live online classes, practical case discussions, and exam simulations. The course is AZAV-certified and can be fully funded by the German Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit).
To qualify for funding, you must have completed a medical degree and be a resident in Germany. If you meet these requirements, you are likely eligible for an education voucher ("Bildungsgutschein").
Lingoda supports you throughout the entire process. After enrolling in the course, a dedicated contact person will assist you with the funding application and provide support during the course.
If government funding is not approved, you can still take the course, but at your own expense.
To enroll in the preparation course with Lingoda, you need a B2 to C1 level in German.
The course lasts 15 weeks full-time, or 30 weeks part-time. It begins with an intensive week, followed by up to 6 months of skills training and a final exam preparation phase. Throughout the course, participants can use the online learning plan in the AMBOSS knowledge platform with flexible self-study units to deepen their knowledge individually.
After you enrol and get approved for funding, you can immediately begin the first self-study sessions in the AMBOSS Kenntnisprüfung study plan. The live online language course starts based on available course dates (offered monthly, both a full-time course and a part-time course).
The language course covers all essential aspects of medical communication, including writing medical reports and linguistic preparation for the Kenntnisprüfung. Additionally, it offers practical case discussions and digital exchanges with physicians. The course includes targeted exam simulations to assess exam readiness. It is complemented by modular self-study units using the AMBOSS Kenntnisprüfung study plan.
The AMBOSS study plan includes all key topics for the Kenntnisprüfung, such as common diseases in internal medicine and surgery, additional content on emergency medicine, clinical pharmacology, imaging techniques, radiation protection, and medical law. It also covers fundamental medical topics and clinical skills. Each learning unit ends with sample questions to test your knowledge. The AMBOSS platform is available outside of study sessions for review and further learning.
The passing rate for the knowledge test varies depending on the federal state, but is less than 50% in most cases. The preparation course increases the pass rate to 76%, as it combines specialist knowledge and technical language, enables practice-oriented learning through case discussions and uses exam simulations to test exam suitability.
Yes, the AMBOSS Kenntnisprüfung study plan is available with an AMBOSS subscription and can be used independently of the Lingoda language course. If you do not yet have an AMBOSS subscription, you can activate one at any time with a discounted annual plan (€16.50/month) or a flexible monthly plan (€25/month) to access the study plan.
The course is specifically designed for physicians preparing for the Kenntnisprüfung in human medicine and is not suitable for other exams.
Yes, the preparation course is flexible and can be taken part-time while working. In part-time mode, the course lasts 33 weeks and includes two intensive weeks, followed by up to six months of skills training and a final exam preparation phase.
If you discontinue the course during the training period (e.g., due to taking the exam earlier than planned), the course is reported as completed and will no longer be funded.
