A group of drugs that activate α2 receptors in presynaptic sympathetic neurons of the central nervous system, which leads to a decrease in sympathetic tone that causes vasodilation and lowers blood pressure. Adverse effects include orthostatic hypotension, sedation, and bradycardia. Agents include clonidine and methyldopa.
