A group of drugs with cytotoxic properties used to inhibit proliferation of rapidly growing cells (as in the treatment of cancer and other proliferative disorders). Classified according to mechanism of action, including alkylating agents, antimetabolites, topoisomerase inhibitors, and mitotic inhibitors. Associated with a range of adverse effects (e.g., nausea, vomiting, increased risk of infection, and impaired growth of healthy cells).
