A superfamily of heme-containing, primarily oxidative enzymes that take part in phase 1 reactions. Responsible for a large amount of drug/toxin breakdown. Alterations in CYP-activity (e.g., due to drug interactions) can cause severe shifts in drug half-life and may lead to supra- or subtherapeutic drug levels.
