A physical examination maneuver performed to evaluate for the presence of ascites. With the patient supine and a second examiner's hand on the midline (to stop transmission through fat), place one hand on the patient's lateral abdominal wall and tap the opposite lateral abdominal wall with the other hand. A palpable wave impulse suggests the presence of ascites.
