A viral infection caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which attacks liver cells and causes liver inflammation. HCV is a bloodborne pathogen commonly transmitted through needlestick injuries in health care settings or shared drug-injecting needles; it can also be transmitted sexually or perinatally. If untreated, acute infection most commonly leads to chronic hepatitis.
