A condition defined by a systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mm Hg and/or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mm Hg based on Joint National Commission (JNC) 8 guidelines. The 2017 guidelines from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) defined hypertension as a systolic blood pressure ≥ 130 mm Hg and/or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 80 mm Hg. Classified as either primary (essential) or secondary (e.g., from renal, endocrine or vascular diseases).
