A nerve that originates from the anterior ramus of the L1 segment of the lumbar plexus. Provides cutaneous sensation to the mons pubis, the upper medial thigh, the root of the penis and the anterior scrotum in males, and the labia majora in females. The ilioinguinal nerve is the afferent limb of the cremasteric reflex.
