The involuntary erection of hair on the surface of the skin due to contraction of the sympathetically innervated piloerector muscles. Piloerection increases the volume of air between hair and skin and therefore increases thermal insulation. Piloerection primarily occurs following exposure to cold, but it can also occur as a result of fear.
